When they started their business in the early days, Huang Yaoru’s shop originally had several hired craftsmen. They studied by doing. All the techniques were taught by Huang Yaoru. You must know that in this industry, the relationship between teachers and apprentices is mostly the relationship between the boss and the hirelings. The apprentice can learn the skills from the master while working. But one day, the three hired craftsmen agreed among themselves to quit at the same time. At that time, there was a lot of work to be rushed, the situation seemed hopeless. Fortunately, the eldest son and the daughter-in-law were just learning how to do the work, and so they pitched in and the crisis passed. From then on, the Nanhui Plaque Carving Shop became a family business...
Now the artisans in the shop are all family. The source of the technique is of course taught by Huang Yaoru. If you ask them how they learned, the answer is that one starts by observing, from a young age. By watching for a long time, one will learn. We think this is how traditional skills are learned. You must spend a long time watching and listening...
Master Huang Yaoru never held back from passing on his skills to others. But he said helplessly: "Nowadays young people are afraid of hardships and can’t learn!" There had been some young people who wanted to study with him, but didn’t last more than three days. One time, one middle-aged man said he was determined to learn, but stopped after just two hours, said he couldn’t stand it!
Looking at the master's hand with scars, and a finger that was accidentally cut off,the master said that after he had carved wood for a long time, his fingers become crooked, and he can understand why young people are now discouraged to take on this craft. However, Master Huang Yaoru regarded these scars as the price of his glory.
The master also said that the industry of hand-made plaques will slowly become a sunset industry. It is not surprising that people don’t want to learn. “Nothing can be forced,”he said.
Like this time our team of children came to visit him and wanted to learn something. He was very enthusiastic to demonstrate to us, hiding nothing at all. After all, his technique is not something you can just pick up quickly.
Despite the fact that Huang Yaoru is already 86 years old, his physical condition is very good, his vitality strong, his smile open, and everything is done by himself. The most enjoyable thing he can do now is to work every day. His daily routine is very regularly: get up at 3:00 in the morning every day, go to the Xuanliang Pavilion next door for a quick worship, start work in the morning until noon, and work in the evening until night.
Our team feels that compared to craftsmanship, Master Huang Yaoru can pass on his positive outlook on life, as he said: "Other people are at rest, while I am at work, but I don't envy others. This is the true meaning of having the right attitude towards everything." He also said that his best works are the ones that make his clients fully satisfied. Those he consider his best works. His attitude for working and living with satisfaction is worth learning.
